Terms of use
Last updated: 3 October 2026
In short: OkayToWalk shows reported crime to help you make your own decisions. It cannot promise that any place or route is safe. Use your judgment, and in an emergency call the local emergency number (911 in the US, 999 in the UK).
1. The service
OkayToWalk (okaytowalk.com) is a free website that maps crime reported to the police in selected cities, compares areas within a city, and suggests walking and cycling routes that spend less distance in areas with more reported crime. By using it you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.
2. Information only, no guarantee of safety
- The map is based on crime reported to the police and published as open data. Many crimes are never reported, data can be incomplete, delayed or inaccurate, and locations are generalized by the police.
- Risk levels compare areas within the same city. They describe past reports, not what will happen, and say nothing about any person or building.
- A “safer” route only means it passes through fewer areas with high reported crime. It is not guaranteed to be safe, and routes may contain errors such as closed paths or missing crossings.
- Alerts depend on your device's location accuracy and connection, and may be late, missing or wrong.
Always use your own judgment, follow traffic rules and local advice, and do not rely on OkayToWalk as your only source of safety information.
3. Uses we do not allow
- Making decisions about housing, lending, insurance, employment or access to services based on the map. The data is not suitable for such decisions and can reinforce discrimination.
- Using the site to harass, stigmatize or target people or communities.
- Automated mass downloading or copying of the site's data, or anything that disrupts the service. The underlying open data is available from the organisations that publish it.
- Using directions while driving in a way that distracts you.
4. Data sources and credits
Crime data comes from the police of the covered cities and the FBI, under their open-data terms. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), map images by OpenFreeMap, place search by Photon (komoot), directions by Valhalla on a server of FOSSGIS e.V. The full list is in the app's “About” section. These services are provided by third parties and may change or be unavailable.
5. Links and partners
The site may link to other websites, including partners who pay us a commission (see the affiliate disclosure). We are not responsible for their content, offers or services; their own terms apply.
6. Liability
OkayToWalk is provided free of charge and “as is”. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for decisions made or harm suffered based on the information on the site, or for its availability. This does not limit our liability for intent or gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.
7. Changes
We may change, add or remove features and cities at any time, and update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version.
8. Applicable law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
